Safety Checklist:
Using your Handmade by Heather sling can be a wonderful experience for both you and your baby. Please keep in mind the following for best results:

  • Remember the safety of you and your baby should always come first. It is important to maintain a constant airflow for your child while in the sling. This is especially true for infants who have not developed the ability to control their head movements.
  • I do not recommend secondary objects to be placed in the sling along with your baby. These items (i.e. toys) can pose a hazard to both you and your child.
  • While using a sling can help you complete chores around the house, please do not use the sling while working in hazardous situations such as with open flames, hot liquids or exercising.
  • When first positioning your baby in the sling, please ensure your child is properly supported and the sling is tightened before letting go.
  • Bending over can shift the weight of your child. Please support your baby to ensure his/her safety while completing such a task.
  • Try wearing your sling in different positions with your child. This may help you and your child with day-to-day wearing.
  • Ensure that the sling rings are between your shoulder and your breast. This will improve comfort and better adjustability of the sling for safety and convenience.
  • Always use common sense when using your HbH sling. If you are unsure about the safety of something, please do not chance it. Always check the seams of the sling regularly for rips or tears.

Sizing:
When considering size for a Handmade by Heather sling, the standard sling is designed for a person who may range in size from 5’-2” to 5’-10”. A large sling is designed for anyone larger in height or build.

The main difference in the sling sizing is the length of the sling itself. If for some reason you have questions, or would like to custom order a sling based upon height or build, please feel free to contact me directly at handmadebyh@gmail.com.

Daily Wearing:
I personally use one of my slings on a daily basis. Depending upon my dress, mood, child or event I’m attending will depend on which sling or slings I pack. Please consider the following:

  • Always check the seams, rings and fabric regularly. If you notice any tears, please discontinue use and contact me directly.
  • Consider the event you are attending. If it is an outdoor environment, remember that both the exposure to temperature and sunlight could have a direct effect on your child. Please keep in mind the safety of your child and take appropriate steps to ensure safety.
  • Position the sling so that it is angled on the cap of your shoulder, rather than on top of your shoulder. This will help ensure the sling properly distributes the weight of your child.
  • Make sure your rings are positioned between your shoulder and breast. This will improve comfort and better adjustability of the sling for safety and convenience.
  • Make sure your sling material is spread out across your back as much as possible, distributing the baby’s weight correctly.
  • Extra sling material (also known as the “tail”): What you do with the tail depends on your feelings or mood. For some, they leave the tail hanging down in front of them. Others will tuck the tail in and around the rings (see some of my pictures). The extra tail may be used to help cover your child while nursing or to help with sun exposure.

How to use your HbH Sling:
Coming soon

Features of your HbH Sling:
Handmade by Heather slings have been designed to accommodate your child from birth into their early walking years, or until around 35 pounds.

Each of the rings used in a HbH sling is individually tested and inspected by the manufacturer before shipment. It must pass an impact test and a 250-pound pull test before being considered ready to ship. This along with three layers of stitching is designed to give you an enjoyable and safe experience.

The simple design of the HbH sling provides the following advantages:

  • Allow you to carry your child in a variety of positions. This key advantage allows your child to grow and develop using the same sling.
  • Adjust to your situation while staying close your child. Move them from the front to the side, upright to lying down or on your back.
  • Maximum adjustability fitting many body types of both the child and you

Caring for your HbH Sling:

  • All of my slings are made out of 100% cotton or a 50/50 blend ~ cotton and polyester.
  • They are machine washable and dryable. However, I typically hang all of my slings to air dry and recommend this to help keep fading to a minimum.
  • If you’re in a pinch and need your sling dried quickly, tie a sock or a burp cloth around the rings before putting it in the dryer. It’s a really good idea to have at least two slings handy so that when one needs washing, you’re still able to snuggle your baby and tend to daily life without missing a beat!
